Modeling Solar Granulation

Summer/Fall 1999

Student: Clark Amerault

Advisor: Dr. Steven R. Lantz

Purpose: I am working with Dr. Steven Lantz this semester at the Cornell Theory Center. Our goal is to create a simulation of the internal workings of the convective zone of the Sun. Dr. Lantz has created many numerical simulations in the past, but this time around the intent is to change the gaseous properties of a model. In previous models it had been assumed that the convection zone of the Sun was made up of an ideal gas, but this is not the case. Therefore, our objective is to modify an existing simulation and linear stability code so that they will take into account certain depth dependencies of thermodynamic variables to account for partial ionizations.
