Introduction

Ranger is used by a wide variety of users with diverse backgrounds and experience on a range of different operating systems. This module is intended to insure that all users have the same basic knowledge to efficiently use Ranger. It contains the information needed to access the system, transfer data and code to the system, compile/link on Ranger, and submit jobs to the batch system. This module will go through each of the above topics but depending on your personal background, your mileage will vary. You may want to skip around somewhat if you're pretty comfortable with Linux and SGE, but there are a few system specific sections that are required reading. Due to the breadth of backgrounds of people using this module, we've provided some alternative learning paths for more experienced users. However, all users will find benefit in following the entire module to completion, and so the "next" links at the bottom of the pages allow an easy way to step through the entire module.

A Note on Notation

Throughout this module, we have used a couple of common notations in order to provide information. Example shell commands (things you can type on your own login) are shown in grey boxes, please feel free to try these commands out. Command line tools are typed in italics, and are usually linked to the man page for that tool. As an example I would refer to the ddate command line tool like this and would provide a recommended use like this:

login3% ddate +'Today is %{%A, the %e of %B%}, %Y.'
